In Yo-Yo Ma’s & Mark’s Morris movie Falling Down Stairs (1997), for me, there is this element of fascinating ambiguity between technical perfection of the performance and a cliché in the whole approach to the interpretation of Bach’s 3rd Suite. I have started to consider the piece as a constant falling down, which I derived from the initial gesture of Suite’s Prelude.
